Why a Pre-Keyboard Class Before Piano Lessons?
Most 4-year-olds have the curiosity for the keyboard but not yet the attention span, finger control or note awareness for traditional lessons. Starting formal piano too early is the fastest way to a child who says "I don't like piano" by age 6.
Our pre-keyboard program solves this. Your child builds the foundations first (listening, coordination, keyboard familiarity), so when they move into beginner keyboard lessons, they're excited instead of overwhelmed.
What to Expect
A playful start to piano, building confidence through fun and discovery.
Playful Keyboard Exploration
Explore the keyboard through fun, pressure-free activities.
Fun Learning Games
Build note awareness and improve hand positioning.
Rhythm & Patterns
Develop rhythm skills through engaging keyboard activities.
Story-Based Learning
Make musical concepts easier and more memorable.
Early Music Reading
- Prepare for reading simple musical notation confidently.
Is My Child Ready? (Quick Checklist)
Your child is a good fit if they:
Are around 4 years old
Love tapping, singing or moving to music
Can join a short group activity with a teacher
Are curious about the piano or keyboard at home
Not sure? Book a trial class and we’ll tell you honestly whether this is the right level, or whether Orffie Scholars or Performer Keyboard fits better.
If your child is still developing independence in group activities, our Orffie Scholars preschool music class may be a better starting point.
Where Their Music Journey Can Lead
Pre-Keyboard is a playful starting point. As children grow, they can continue into keyboard lessons, beginner piano, graded learning and other musical opportunities.
Your child starts with playful keyboard foundations, with a pathway that can continue through group keyboard lessons, beginner piano and eventually graded music learning.
ABRSM Grade 3 Distinction
A real example of the musical progress students can work towards as they continue through the studio's programmes.
SIPC 2nd Prize
A student achievement showing what can be possible as children continue developing their musical skills beyond the early foundation stages.
From Playful Music to Confident Keyboard Learning
The aim of Pre-Keyboard is not to turn a 4-year-old into a pianist overnight.
It’s to create a strong starting point.
Your child gets time to become comfortable with the keyboard, understand basic musical ideas and develop the coordination needed for their next stage. When they’re ready for more structured learning, they can move forward with skills and familiarity already in place.

Parent: FAQs
Is my 4-year-old too young for keyboard lessons?
Not in a pre-keyboard class. This program is designed for 4-year-olds. There's no formal practice, sitting still for long stretches, or reading music. Children learn through games, stories and movement at the keyboard.
What happens after Pre-Keyboard?
Most children move on to Orffie Performer Keyboard (ages 5-6) for group keyboard lessons, then Beginner Piano. We'll tell you when your child is ready. There's no need to guess.
What does the $55 material fee cover?
Your child gets a personal instrument kit to build rhythm and motor skills, plus access to class music tracks to listen to at home. There are no other hidden costs.
