Is Your Child Ready for ABRSM?
ABRSM is usually a good fit for a child who already has some piano experience and is comfortable with basic music reading and playing.
They may be ready if they:
- Can read and play simple pieces independently
- Enjoy practising and improving a piece over time
- Have a good foundation in piano technique
- Can follow musical instructions such as rhythm, dynamics and articulation
- Are ready for a more structured musical goal
There is no need to rush into an exam simply because your child has reached a certain age. The right time depends on their current playing ability, confidence, and readiness.
If your child is just starting piano, our Beginner Piano Program may be the better place to begin.
What Does An ABRSM Piano Exam Involve?
ABRSM Practical Grades are designed to assess more than how well a child can play a few prepared pieces.
Your child works towards several connected skills:
Playing the repertoire
Children prepare three pieces from the ABRSM syllabus, learning to play them accurately while developing musical expression, phrasing, tone and interpretation.
Scales and arpeggios
Technical work helps children become more familiar with keys, patterns and finger movement while developing control and fluency.
Sight-reading
Children practise looking at unfamiliar music and turning the notation into sound. Regular sight-reading work helps them become less dependent on memorised pieces.
Aural skills
Listening is an important part of being a musician. Children learn to recognise and respond to musical features such as rhythm, pitch, melody and harmony.
These areas are taught together rather than treated as separate exam exercises. That helps children understand why they are learning each skill and how it connects to their playing.
ABRSM at Gail's: A Natural Next Stage
Many children begin with a love of music before they are ready for formal exam preparation.
At Gail’s Piano Studio, the journey can grow with them:
Early music → Keyboard → Beginner Piano → ABRSM
Children aged 5–6 can start with Orffie Performer Keyboard, while children aged 7+ can build their piano foundation through our Beginner Piano Program before progressing to ABRSM when ready.
This means your child does not have to start with exams. They can build the skills and confidence first, then take on a graded goal when the timing is right.
Not sure which stage is right for your child? Compare our piano and keyboard programmes to explore the options.
Our ABRSM students pass, and most score Merit or Distinction
Every Grade 1 to Grade 8 piano exam is marked out of 150. Our structured exam preparation keeps students in the top part of that scale.

What Your Child Takes Away From the Programme
The certificate is one part of the journey.
Through consistent ABRSM preparation, your child can also develop:
- Stronger piano technique: More control, coordination and confidence at the keyboard.
- Better music reading: The ability to approach unfamiliar music instead of relying entirely on memorisation.
- Musical listening skills: A stronger ear for rhythm, pitch, dynamics and musical detail.
- Performance confidence: Experience preparing, performing and staying composed when others are listening.
FAQs
What is ABRSM?
ABRSM (the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) runs internationally recognised graded music exams, from Grade 1 to Grade 8.
Does my child have to take every grade?
No. Your child's teacher advises on timing, and children can take exams at a pace that suits them.
How long does it take to prepare for an exam?
It depends on your child's starting point and practice. Your teacher will give you a realistic timeline for each grade.
Is a theory exam required?
ABRSM requires Grade 5 Music Theory (or an equivalent qualification) before practical exams at Grade 6 and above. Your teacher will guide you on when to start.
